An Athletes Self Reliability
The premise of the piece called, "Self-Reliance" is to not be afraid to share one's opinions or beliefs because someone else thinks differently. The text states, "To believe your own thought, to believe that what is true for you in your private heart is true for all men, — that is genius," Emerson is saying one must express their opinions/self. To have the ability to counter the beliefs of the majority is genius within itself. Another statement from the text I would like to bring up is, "It may be safely trusted as proportionate and of good issues, so it be faithfully imparted, but God will not have his work made manifest by cowards." The author is referring to all the people who ignore their thoughts and stay in their comfort zone. People dismiss their own thoughts and ideas out of fear of being judged and wrong. I think the text, by Emerson is tautology because the text is true only out of necessity. click here
I imagine that self-reliance and sports have an exceedingly strong connection. As said by Emerson to rely on your own beliefs is essential, just as it is crucial to rely on your own skill in athletics. While participating in a sport you rely on your guardians, coach, teammates, etc. but foremost you must rely on yourself. If one were to doubt their ability, similar to as if one were to doubt their beliefs, they would be at a huge disadvantage. Nobody ever has growth without attempting new things! Even when the majority doubts you, it is salient to continue to work assiduously. The example I have presented is a posteriori because these are known facts that I have gained out of experience. click here
